About the event
Students will learn how to make a book with a rounded spine by hand. Learn skills such as grain direction, sew for swell, and round and back a spine. Students will learn a method for attaching board covers, measuring for squares, and learn what a "square" is. This is a two day class with prep work being done on day one. Students must attend both days in order to complete their book.
All materials included. Previous bookbinding experience is welcome by not necessary. Age minimum 16.
This class is taught by Mel Hewitt.
Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. You can learn more about her and her work at www.librobuch.com.
